On Friday February 4th, two concerts
took place in the Mayflower Community Centre to raise funds for the
tsunami disaster that happened over the Christmas period in Asia.
Taking part were past and present pupils of our school, a band made up
of teachers plus local musicians.
Morning Concert
The first concert started at 12.30
with Mr King acting as MC. Starting off proceedings was local band The
Vibes, consisting of Leo Logan, Ronan Murphy, Michael McGovern, Stephen
McKenna and Joanne Logan. They performed a mixture of original and
cover versions and really got the crowd going. Next on stage was the
much awaited band consisting of teachers from the school. They had been
training very hard in the weeks leading up to the concert, and now was
the crunch time. Following The Vibes was not going to be easy, but like
the true professionals that they are, they gave a brilliant
performance. The teachers taking part were Mr McCormack, Mr Nolan, Mr
McManus and Mr Noone. Some of them were threatening to give up the
teaching and go on the road touring full-time, but they were persuaded
to keep teaching. Lucky students!!
Evening Concert
There was a great turnout for the evening concert
with the hall full. Local County Councillor Enda McGloin was the MC for
the evening. The Vibes kicked off proceedings at 8.15 pm playing for
about 30 minutes. Next on stage was our Music teacher, Miss Watson, who
played a variety of songs from around the world on the accordion.
Well-known Drumshanbo musicians Eamon & Orla Daly were next on stage,
creating a beautiful combination of harp and vocals. The quartet of
teachers was next to perform, and again made a fantastic impression on
the audience. Enda then introduced Charlie McGettigan, Eurovision
winner in 1994. Charlie entertained the audience for about 45 minutes
with his unique combination of wit and song. Finally, all the musicians
who had taken part in the concert, went on stage and performed together.
The concerts were a tremendous success,
raising over €5,000. This money will be used in buying two boats for
the people affected by the tsunami. The name of our school will be
written on the boats. So many people were involved in the production of
the concert. If we start mentioning names, someone may be omitted. In
general, it was great to have students (past and present), teachers and
local musicians all join together to put a truly professional show on.
