Drumshanbo Vocational School was built in 1964 by McGarry Brothers, Ballinamore.  The schools existence should be attributed to the late Joe Mooney who after several years of political pressure eventually succeeded in its establishment in the town.  It is situated in the middle of Leitrim on the southern tip of Lough Allen with Slieve Anieran on one side and the Arigna mountains on the other side.

Since 1964 the school has evolved from a junior school of 60 pupils to its present existence, being a senior school facilitating all Second Level Education and onto Third Level Education.  The school has  350 in its present state - 250 of the students are in the 12-18 age group taking Junior and Leaving Certificate, while the remainder attend courses in Computer and related studies, some in Sound Engineering and related studies, some in Traditional and Modern Music and some in Art and related subjects.

Drumshanbo was a coal mining area until 1990.  In recent years there has been an attempt to attract small food based and electronic based industries to the area.  Drumshanbo Vocational School has an important role in this drive, through the promotion and training of students to meet this objective.  Since 1964, the school has embraced change and evolved to suit the needs of the town and surrounding area.

Drumshanbo Vocational School continues to serve the community through a range of courses offered to suit the people of the community.  It has become totally integrated into the community and uses its own campus together with other suitable available premises within the area.  The school is the community and the community is the school.
